We may even buy Google AdWords or other advertising space on similar top sites. We can do article or press release syndication, social networking tactics, or submit our site to multiple directories. But, what happens when someone gets to your website? </p>
<p>From <a href="http://google.com" target="_blank">Google</a>:<br />
&#8220;<strong>Bounce Rate:</strong> Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page). Bounce rate is a measure of visit quality and a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance (landing) pages aren&#8217;t relevant to your visitors. You can minimize Bounce Rates by tailoring landing pages to each keyword and ad that you run. Landing pages should provide the information and services that were promised in the ad copy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bounce rates don&#8217;t just apply is you are running an AdWords campaign though. On a side note, <strong>it is very wise</strong> to sign up for <a href="http://www.google.com/analytics" target="_blank">Google&#8217;s free Analytics</a> for your website. You add a small piece of code to the footer of your website and now you have access to how many visitors are on your site every day, what part of the world they are getting to your site from, how long they stayed on your website, what keywords they typed into Google to find your site and more. One of these statistics is your bounce rate.</p>
<p>A good starting out goal to have is for your <strong>bounce rate to be lower than 50%</strong>. For instance, if your bounce rate for a page is 50%: Each person who entered your website, whichever page they viewed (not always the home page), they left your website from the same page. It is good to navigate your users to other pages within your site, guide them to new content, get them to sign up for your list or buy your product/service.</p>
<p><strong>So what are the things that will impact a person staying on your site or leaving? Well, lots of things. I&#8217;ll cover quite a bit here for you&#8230;</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>One thing you can do is create links on each page (or blog post) to other pages or posts within your site. A good rule of thumb is to have about 3 links on each page. One might be to the &#8220;About&#8221; page of my site, another link might be to the &#8220;Quote&#8221; page of my site, and the last might be to a blog post I wrote last week. That way, you are giving 3 completely different links to information your user might be seeking. (Note: You should test if you get better results by having your links support the content they are reading, or if you get better results by linking to content with a different topic.)
<li>Your design has a lot to do with your bounce rate and improving your website optimization. Is your look and feel out dated or modern? If you look at sites like Twitter and Apple and even YouTube&#8230; what elements do they have in common? How is that different from your website? <li>When is the last time you updated your website content? Do you have information that isn&#8217;t valid, or broken links, or old phone numbers? Make an effort to go to your site every quarter and update the information on your website. Maybe hire someone to optimize your content so you are getting more sales. Most of your bounce rate has to do with your content. Does your headline or title really match what the content is about or are you stretching just to get more traffic.
<li>Have a professional check your website navigation process. You want to make it as easy as possible for a visitor to find what they are looking for on your website. Sometimes clients want to get &#8220;creative&#8221; on their site and change the fundamental location or look for something that messes a visitor up &#8211; or gets them to pause in their track&#8230;which you don&#8217;t want. Is your &#8216;logout&#8217; button on the top left? Is your logo on the top right? Is your &#8216;contact&#8217; page easy to find? etc.</li>
</ol>
<p>Think about all of the irritations you experience when you are searching for something on Google. What makes you leave a site right away? I can tell you for me it is when I am searching for a topic, then a site comes up that has nothing to do with my topic. It is really annoying to me &#8211; and I am sure you too. Keep this in mind.</p>
<p><strong>Homework:</strong> Go through each page in your website and take notes on the things that are out of place, the content that is old, the inconsistencies that appear on every page, etc. Next make a wish list of items you&#8217;d like to add (maybe a sign-up form to build a list, a new design, a list of new pages you want to make content for, etc.). Last separate the items that you can do yourself and the ones you need to hire out for. I have clients who come to me just needing a few minor tweaks done to their site. I can create a special deal for them, such as having them just get a block of my time, and execute the list right away.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Website Design is one of the most essential elements of starting a website.</strong> The design of your website will convey a message to new visitors and you have the ability to control what their impression is. </p>
<p>Having a web design that sends the wrong message to your audience can <a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/website-optimization-how-to-lower-bounce-rate.html">have an impact on your bounce rate</a> (the rate at which someone clicks on your site and immediately clicks the back button within 5 seconds). Having an ineffective design will cost you money! It&#8217;s the money you could be making if people signed up for your list, stayed to look through your resources or hired you for your services. A website design that lacks proper Internet Marketing planning and strategy is something we see often, unfortunately, but something you can change luckily.</p>
<p>When we sit down with a new client we will review their existing design and discuss the holes which lead to visitors exiting the site without taking action. When sitting down with a new client who wants to start a website, we teach them the proven strategies for web design that will get them a higher conversion rate and better long-term results.</p>
<p><strong>Below I have listed a few key things to consider when approaching design:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Make sure you ask your designer for your &#8220;final files&#8221; which will most likely include a Photoshop file with layers, any fonts the designer used, and a copy of the iStock photos they used. If you need to make a change later or hire a new designer (or that designer just isn&#8217;t around in the future) you want to have all copies of your design. It&#8217;s also wise to ask your designer if they will provide these files to you before even starting design work &#8211; if they say no, run!</p>
<li>Do you have a logo that describes your business or has a visual meaning? (We can help with logo design too!)
<li>Your tagline is important. It should be less than 7 words and should totally describe your business and intention. Having a confusing tagline can be a turn off to new visitors and they may exit your site unless something else grabs their attention
<li> Once your design is built into your website, check to make sure your web programmer checked the site in all browsers for inconsistencies (FireFox, Internet Explorer 7 &#038; 8, Safari, Google Chrome). When a programmer codes the design into the website frame they need to have a knowledge of how these different browsers read code &#8211; they all read HTML and PHP code slightly different. So while your design could look great in FireFox it could look totally screwed up in Safari. Be sure to check this.
<li>Do you make it easy for visitors to find a way to contact you? I mean, in your face easy. If not, change this immediately!
<li>Check to see how you website design looks on a smart phone (Droid, iPhone, Blackberry). It is worth the cost and time to get your phone optimized for mobile web. <li>There are clients out there who insist the size of their website font is 15pt or 16pt. This is huge and can be annoying to your visitors. We recommend size 11-14 max depending on the font used.
<li>Be sure to only use &#8220;web ready&#8221; fonts on your site. <a href="http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html" target="_blank">Click here to see a list of web ready fonts</a>.
<li>It&#8217;s not recommended to use more than 3 colors, fonts or styles within your website design. We want design to be modern, professional yet soothing to your visitors. If your colors or design jump out at them, they will leave. Even check out how simple Facebook is &#8211; there&#8217;s a reason for that.
<li>Never, ever use reverse text (white text on a dark background). Your visitors will be able to read your content for the first minute maybe, but then their eyes will start to feel strain and they will leave your site no matter how great your content is.
<li>How are you using the Upper Right Quadrant (URQ) of your header? This is the most looked at spot on your site for new visitors (just as your About page is the most clicked page in your site). This is a great place to add a phone number, testimonial, search bar, book cover &#8211; what you really want visitors to see.
<li>Does your <a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/email-list-building-opt-in-newsletter-signup-box-examples.html">opt-in newsletter signup box</a> (for email subscribers) stand out, or get lost in the design?</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Website Design Process:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>First, you will be sent a Pre-Flight document which is a sort of website evaluation. This will guide us through the exact design and layout of your site, based on your wants and needs.</p>
<li>Once we get the filled out pre-flight back, Marty and I will arrange a one hour call to review the pre-flight with you and ensure we are all on the same page for the creation of your site.
<li> I will submit a hand drawn sketch to you within a day or two that will be the rough layout of your site.
<li>Once you approve that layout, I send your pre-flight, logo (or we can create this for you), and the sketch to our design team.
<li>Over the course of a week, you will receive 3 completely different designs.
<li>You can pick one of the 3 designs, or combine all three, to create your final design. We will work on making changes to the design to make it one you&#8217;re happy with and one that will convert.
<li>Once the final design is approved, we begin to add that to the framework of your site.</li>

This blogging guide is a really great training piece that can help you uncover the missing pieces to your blogging success. Below you will find 2 tips from each of the 10 categories I give tips and tools for, plus one more at the end.</p>
<h3>Blog-Site Setup Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Do not type your email address into a page and expose it for the world to see. You will increase your spam emails ten-fold. Instead, add in a “Contact form” to your site and link to that page.</li>
<li>Choose a domain name with these ideas in mind: Two or three words, anyone can spell it, easy to remember, and relates to the main topic or theme you plan to write about.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Design Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Avoid using a theme that displays “reverse text” (white text on a dark background). Readers will find this difficult to read after a while and will end up leaving your site.</li>
<li>People like image-use but note that you want to only use “royalty free” images. If you took your own images, you are safe. Otherwise, I would suggest using a site such as <a href="http://istockphoto.com" target="_blank">http://istockphoto.com</a> to buy the rights to any photo, video or illustration you want.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Blog Security Tips:</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol>
<li>WordPress sites are usually connected to a “database” which is like a storage unit that stores your design, posts and pages. There are plugins out there, like wp-database-backup, which will allow you to download a copy of your database as often as you want. I suggest a weekly download.</li>
<li>Set your password to contain at least 1 capital letter, at least 1 number, and add an exclamation mark. Keep your passwords at least 8 characters long. You always want to consider the easy ways people can hack your website &#8211; this starts with your password.</li>
</ol>
<h3>First-Timer Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>When starting out with your first blog, come in with the mindset that it very well could take 6 months before you see much traction on your blog in terms of visitation or comments.</li>
<li>Sign up for “<a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/how-set-google-alerts-stay-current-industry-news-web-action.html">Google Alerts</a>” for the top 3 keywords associated to your blog. Google will send you an email, alerting you when anyone on the web has published something new under that topic. This will help you write about newsworthy topics and keep up with your competition.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Search Engine Optimization Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Find blogs that are in the same industry as yours and contact the owner. Ask if they will publish one of your blog posts on their blog (for cross-promotion) and/or ask if they will link to your blog in one of their posts or pages.</li>
<li>Google 2 plugin names and add them to your blog today! One is called “<a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/new-wordpress-seo-evaluation-plugin-scribe.html">Scribe</a>” which will evaluate every post or page you write and give you a score on a 100% scale to guide you on how well your page or post will rank in search engines. The second is called “All In One SEO” which allows you to enter in “Meta Data” (an alternate title, description and keywords for your post) that will be a huge factor in getting good Search Engine Rankings.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Blog Post Writing Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Write 2-5 blog posts per week depending on what your schedule will allow. You must keep momentum for Search Engine Ranking and to get any momentum with visitation or commenting.</li>
<li>Tell stories. People can engage more easily when you are telling a story, your readers are more likely to share your post with others and they will remember what you’ve said longer on average.</li>
</ol>
<h3>List Building Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Start building a list of subscribers by offering a free goodie on your site, that has value(!), in exchange for their email address. Place your <a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/email-list-building-opt-in-newsletter-signup-box-examples.html">signup box</a>on the right side of your site, near the top of the page.</li>
<li>Use the email management system <a href="http://insightfuldevelopment.com/building-managing-your-email-subscriber-list-with-constant-contact.html">Constant Contact</a> to build your list because it has some of the highest deliverability rates in the industry compared to other programs (meaning more of your emails reach your readers and don’t get caught in spam filters), it&#8217;s inexpensive and very easy to learn/maintain.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Social Networking Tips:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Add social networking icons in the top right sidebar of your site to show readers you are up with the times. This is a great way to gain more followers and friends as well.</li>
<li>Install the “Sexy Bookmarks” plugin so readers can easily share your blog post on the most popular social networks like Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Technorati, StumbleUpon, Reddit and more.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Tips to Getting More Comments:</h3>
<ol>
<li>At the end of blog posts, ask a question or end on a cliff-hanger note. This will encourage readers to comment.</li>
<li>Give people a chance to win something of value for free based on who enters in the best comment to your post.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Visitation Statistic Tips:</h3>

<li>Use Google&#8217;s Feedburner service to offer &#8220;Get Blog Posts in Your Email Inbox&#8221; to readers. This will increase your number of overall readers.</li>
<li>Sign up for Google’s free “Analytics” account. This program allows you to track how many visitors you are getting per day, how they found you, what pages they looked out and more.</li>
